Rohan Bopanna has achieved a remarkable feat in his tennis career. The 43-year-old Indian has become the oldest player to reach the world number one ranking in men’s doubles, after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2024 with his partner Matthew Ebden.
Bopanna and Ebden, the second seeds, defeated the local pair of John Millman and Edward Winter in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. They will face the unseeded duo of Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang in the semi-finals.
Bopanna, who had a career-high ranking of No. 3 in 2013, will surpass the record of USA’s Rajeev Ram, who became the world number one in October 2022 at the age of 38. Bopanna will also join the elite club of Indian players who have attained the top spot in doubles, such as Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza.
Bopanna, who made his debut more than 20 years ago, has been one of the most consistent and successful doubles players in the world. He has won 19 ATP titles, including the mixed doubles title at the French Open in 2017 with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. It’s been an incredible 20 years playing this tournament week in, week out, and today, reaching the No 1 ranking, it’s an extremely amazing and proud feeling. It probably hasn’t sunk in fully yet but still credit to the entire team. These last 13 months have been an incredibly consistent kind of a year. I am proud to be where I am today, at the ranking of no. 1. So, India needed this, Indian tennis needed this. I am really happy to be representing India across the world in this tennis journey. There’s so much love and support from the entire country for two decades. I am thankful for all the support. I think, this is from my side, giving back to everyone in India.
