Early Life and Background

On 6 May 1962, Dhiraj Seth was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, into a family deeply connected with the armed forces. While his mother, Veena Seth, provided the family with dignified and resilient support, his father, Lt. Gen. Krishna Mohan Seth, was the Adjutant General of the Indian Army. Discipline and patriotism were ingrained in his daily life as he grew up in such a setting.

From a young age, Seth showed interest in leadership and academics. He studied at St. Mary’s School, Kasauli, and later at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, where he developed a strong foundation in academics and sports. He entered the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and later trained at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

Education and Training

He first studied at St. Mary’s School in Kasauli, where he learned the basics of discipline and teamwork. Later, he moved to The Lawrence School, Lovedale, one of India’s well-known boarding schools. After school, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla. Military Career Beginnings

General Seth was commissioned into the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) on 20 December 1986. This regiment is one of the oldest and most respected units in the Indian Army. His early years in service were marked by hard work and dedication.

He quickly stood out for his skills. He won the Silver Centurion award in the Young Officers Course and ranked first in several military courses. These achievements showed his sharp mind and ability to lead. His early career was not just about learning but also about proving himself as a capable officer.

Command Roles and Leadership Positions

He commanded Skinner’s Horse regiment, a historic unit with a proud legacy. Later, he led the 98 Armoured Brigade, where he focused on modernising equipment and improving training standards. He also commanded the Uniform Force in Jammu and Kashmir, a role that required both courage and strategic thinking. His leadership in sensitive areas showed his ability to handle complex situations.

In 2021, he became the General Officer Commanding XXI Corps, followed by the General Officer Commanding Delhi Area in 2022. He later served as GOC-in-C South Western Command (2023–2024) and GOC-in-C Southern Command (2024–2026). In April 2026, he was appointed as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, and just two months later, he was chosen as the Chief of Army Staff.

International Assignments and UN Service

General Seth also represented India on the global stage. In 1995–1996, he served with the United Nations Angola Verification Mission III. His role as an Operations Officer in peacekeeping gave him international exposure and taught him the importance of cooperation between nations.

His role as Director General (Discipline, Ceremonial & Welfare) highlighted his concern for the welfare of soldiers. He also worked as Additional Director General for Weapons & Equipment, focusing on modernisation and procurement.

Appointment as Chief of Army Staff

On 13 June 2026, the Government of India announced General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of Army Staff. On June 30, 2026, he formally assumed leadership, replacing General Upendra Dwivedi. His appointment was historic because he became the third Army Chief from the 2nd Lancers regiment and the seventh from the Armoured Corps.
