Biography

Dennis Graham was born on September 20, 1954 (age: 69 years, as of 2023), in Memphis, Tennessee, to Larry Graham and Samantha Beeching. He is of African descent, as both his parents hail from South Africa. He grew up in a musical family, surrounded by funk, rock, soul, and country music. His elder brother, Larry Graham Jr., is a legendary funk bassist, who played with the psychedelic soul/funk band Sly and the Family Stone, and founded his own band, Graham Central Station.
His uncle, Willie Mitchell, was a renowned Memphis music producer, who worked with artists like Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Otis Clay. His cousin, Teenie Hodges, was a guitarist and songwriter for Al Green, and co-wrote some of his classic hits, such as “Take Me to the River” and “Love and Happiness”.
Dennis developed a passion for music at a young age, and learned to play piano, guitar, and drums. He joined his first band when he was a teenager, and spent his nights and weekends gigging at local clubs and venues. When he was 18, he got an opportunity to perform as a drummer alongside country musician Jerry Lee Lewis, who was impressed by his skills and invited him to join his band. He toured with Lewis for several years, and gained valuable experience and exposure in the music scene.
Marriage and Fatherhood

In the early 1980s, Dennis Graham moved to Toronto, Canada, where he met Sandra “Sandi” Sher, a Canadian woman of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, who worked as an English teacher and florist. The couple met at a club named Bluenote, where Dennis was performing with Jerry Lee Lewis. They fell in love and got married in June 1985. On October 24, 1986, they welcomed their son, Aubrey Drake Graham, who would later become one of the most popular and influential rap stars in the world.
Dennis and Sandi’s marriage was not without its challenges, however. he struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and was often away from home, pursuing his musical career. The couple divorced when Drake was five years old, and Sandi raised him as a single mother in Toronto. He moved back to the United States, and maintained a distant relationship with his son, who would visit him in Memphis every summer.
He has two other children from previous relationships: a daughter named Raemiah Julianna, who is a singer and songwriter, and a son named Stephen, who is a rapper and producer. He is also a grandfather to Drake’s son, Adonis Mahbed Graham, who was born on October 11, 2017, to French artist Sophie Brussaux.
Relationship with Drake
Dennis Graham and Drake have had a complicated and evolving relationship over the years. Drake has often rapped about his father’s absence and influence in his songs, such as “Look What You’ve Done”, “From Time”, and “You & The 6”. He has also expressed his admiration and gratitude for his father’s musical legacy and support. In an interview with XXL magazine in 2011, Drake said:
“My dad is a star, that’s what you have to understand. I can call my dad right now and be like, ‘Yo, dad, I need you to fly to shoot.’ He’s always down. I’m living my dad’s dream. My dad wanted to be a famous singer. I have my dad on another bonus record on the album called ‘Under Ground Kings’. He’s more ecstatic about my career than I am. He makes sure to remind me about that all the time. All of my dad’s friends are famous. He knows Rick James and all those guys. That’s who he grew up with. He’s not a regular dad. He’s a cool dad for sure.”
Dennis has also shown his love and pride for his son, and has appeared in some of his music videos, such as “Worst Behavior”, “Started from the Bottom”, and “Hotline Bling”. He has also featured on the Canadian band The Arkells’ song “Drake’s Dad”, which is inspired by a chance encounter they had with him in a bar in Nashville. He has also defended his son from critics and rivals, such as Pusha T, who dissed Drake and revealed his son’s existence in his 2018 track “The Story of Adidon”.
Despite their ups and downs, Dennis and Drake seem to be in a good place with each other now, and have reconciled their differences. In 2019, Drake celebrated his father’s 65th birthday with a heartfelt Instagram post, writing:

“Happy Birthday to my OG. The one that taught me everything I know. I love you with all my heart and I’m so proud of you for being the best father and grandfather you can possibly be. You are a legend and a king. I will always honor and respect you. Thank you for always being there for me no matter what. Enjoy your day to the fullest. More life, more blessings, more love.”
Dennis Graham also showed his support for his ex-wife Sandi at her 75th birthday party in January 2023, and posed for a family portrait with Drake and Adonis. He captioned the photo: “Happy Birthday Pinky, we love you”.
