Early Life and Background

Payal was born in Balangir, a small town in Odisha, in 2008. Her family lived a modest life. Her father, Ramchandra Nag, worked as a mason and labourer, while her mother also worked as a labourer. The family often struggled to make ends meet, and they moved frequently in search of work. Despite these hardships, Payal was a cheerful child who loved to draw and play.

Her childhood was simple, filled with the joys of small-town life. But destiny had something very different planned for her. At the age of eight, her life changed forever due to a tragic accident.

The Life-Changing Accident

In 2015, Payal suffered a severe electrocution accident. The incident left her critically injured, and doctors had no choice but to amputate both her arms and legs to save her life. For a young child, this was a devastating blow. Suddenly, she had to face a world where even basic tasks seemed impossible.

The accident not only changed her physically but also emotionally. She had to learn to live without limbs, which meant relearning everything from scratch. For her family, it was heartbreaking, but they stood by her side. Payal’s courage during this time was remarkable. Instead of giving up, she slowly began to adapt to her new reality.

Education and Orphanage Years

After the accident, Payal’s life took another turn. In 2019, she was admitted to Parvatigiri Balniketan, an orphanage in Odisha. This institution became her second home. Here, she began to learn basic life skills again. She discovered that she could write and sketch using her mouth.

Her talent for sketching soon became known. She participated in district-level competitions and won prizes for her artwork. Her sketches, often portraits, were shared on social media, where they caught the attention of many. This was the first step towards her recognition as someone extraordinary.

Discovery of Talent in Archery

In 2022, Payal’s life changed once again. Her sketches went viral on social media, and one of those posts reached archery coach Kuldeep Vedwan. He saw potential in her determination and invited her to train at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Archery Academy in Jammu.

At first, archery seemed impossible for someone without arms and legs. But Payal was determined. She began training under Vedwan’s guidance. Her elder sister, Varsha Nag, also joined her at the academy to help with daily needs. Slowly, Payal learned to hold the bow with her mouth and release the string using her shoulder.

Training Journey and Techniques

Payal had to invent her own methods. She would anchor the bow with her mouth and use her shoulder to release the arrow. This technique required immense strength and patience. She drew inspiration from para-archer Sheetal Devi, who had also overcome physical challenges to succeed.

Day by day, Payal improved. Her dedication impressed everyone at the academy. She practiced for hours, often facing pain and exhaustion. But she never gave up. Her journey from sketch artist to archer was nothing short of extraordinary.

Career Milestones

Nag’s journey in archery quickly turned into a story of success. In March 2025, she won a silver medal at the Khelo India Para Games held in New Delhi. Later that year, in December 2025, she achieved another milestone. At the Para Archery Nationals in Jaipur, she defeated her idol Sheetal Devi.

Her biggest achievement came in April 2026 at the World Archery Para Series in Bangkok. Payal became the first quadruple amputee archer to win the gold medal. This victory placed her name in history and made her a global inspiration.
