Early Life and Background

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was born on 26 January 1948 in Thakurgaon, a district in northern Bangladesh, which was then part of East Bengal under Pakistan. Alamgir grew up in a traditional yet politically aware family. His ancestral roots trace back to Mirzapur village in Panchagarh district, which is known for its cultural and historical significance. Growing up in a politically active environment, he was exposed to discussions about governance, democracy, and public service from an early age.

Education

Education played a central role in Alamgir’s early life. Student Activism and Early Political Involvement

He became actively involved with the East Pakistan Students Union (EPSU), a progressive student organization that played a key role in mobilizing young voices against authoritarian rule. This period was marked by mass protests, strikes, and student-led movements demanding democracy and justice. Alamgir’s role in these movements earned him recognition as a fearless leader. However, his activism also came at a cost. He was arrested and imprisoned for his political activities, an experience that strengthened his resolve to fight for democracy.
