Early Life and Background

Birender Dhanoa was born in Deoghar, Bihar, but his family roots trace back to Gharuan village in Mohali, Punjab. Growing up in a family with strong military and administrative traditions, Dhanoa was exposed to discipline and service from an early age. His grandfather, Captain Sant Singh, was a World War II veteran who fought bravely in Burma.

He completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s School, Ranchi, where he was known for his sharp mind and interest in outdoor activities. Later, he studied at St. George’s College, Mussoorie, before moving to the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun.

Family and Personal Life

Dhanoa comes from a distinguished family. His father, Sorain Singh, was an IAS officer who served as the Chief Secretary of Punjab and Bihar. His mother, Sukhdev Kaur, was a homemaker who played a key role in shaping his values.

He is married to Kamalpreet Kaur Dhanoa, and together they have a son named Jasman Dhanoa. The family belongs to the Sikh Jat community, and Dhanoa has always been proud of his heritage. Despite his busy career, he has been known as a family man who values traditions and relationships.

Education and Training

Dhanoa’s journey into the Air Force was marked by rigorous training and academic excellence. After completing his schooling, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, where he trained as a cadet. His performance at NDA was outstanding, and he soon earned a commission into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in June 1978.

Later, he attended the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, in 1992, where he completed the Staff Course. Over the years, he also trained on several fighter aircraft, including the MiG-21, Jaguar, MiG-29, and Su-30MKI, logging more than 3,000 hours of flying. His spotless safety record and reputation as a Category ‘A’ Flying Instructor made him one of the most respected pilots in the force.

Entry into the Indian Air Force

Birender Singh was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in June 1978. From the very beginning, he showed remarkable skill and discipline. He trained on several fighter aircraft, including the MiG-21, Jaguar, MiG-29, and Su-30MKI, and logged more than 3,000 hours of flying. His spotless safety record made him stand out among his peers.

He was also a Category ‘A’ Flying Instructor, which meant he was trusted to train other pilots to the highest standards. His ability to teach and lead was noticed early in his career. Over the years, he held several important positions, including commanding frontline squadrons and serving as Senior Air Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

Role in the Kargil War (1999)

One of the most defining moments in Dhanoa’s career came during the Kargil War of 1999. At that time, he was the Commanding Officer of a frontline fighter squadron. The Indian Army was engaged in a tough battle to push back intruders from the Line of Control, and the Air Force was called in to provide support.

Dhanoa introduced the idea of night bombing at high altitudes, a strategy that was not commonly used before. His squadron carried out several successful missions, earning recognition as the best fighter squadron of Headquarters Western Air Command. For his bravery and leadership, Dhanoa was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM) in 1999.

Rise Through the Ranks

After the Kargil War, Dhanoa continued to rise steadily through the ranks of the Air Force. He served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Air Command from 2014 to 2015, where he oversaw operations in a region critical to India’s defence.

In 2015, he was appointed Vice Chief of Air Staff, and the following year, he became the 22nd Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. His tenure as Chief lasted from 31 December 2016 to 30 September 2019. During this period, he also served as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, making him one of the most influential military leaders in India.

Leadership During the Balakot Airstrike (2019)

One of the most historic moments in Birender Dhanoa’s career came in February 2019, when the Indian Air Force carried out the Balakot Airstrike. This operation was in response to the Pulwama terror attack, which had claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.

This was the first time since the 1971 war that the Indian Air Force had crossed the Line of Control to strike targets inside Pakistan. The Jaish-e-Mohammed camps were successfully destroyed by Mirage 2000 fighter jets. Dhanoa’s role was crucial in ensuring that the operation was precise, effective, and safe for the pilots involved.

International Engagements

During his tenure as Chief of Air Staff, Dhanoa also represented India on the global stage. He visited several countries, including France, Australia, USA, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Israel, Brazil, UK, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Thailand, to strengthen military ties and cooperation.

His international engagements showed his commitment to keeping India at par with leading air forces around the world. These efforts also helped India secure better training opportunities, joint exercises, and access to advanced technology.

Retirement and Later Life

Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa retired on 30 September 2019, after serving the nation for more than four decades. His farewell was marked by a ceremonial sortie with Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, the pilot who became a national hero after the dogfight with Pakistani jets earlier that year.

After retirement, Dhanoa continued to remain active in public life. In 2021, he was appointed as an Independent Director at Hero MotoCorp, showing his ability to contribute beyond the military. In 2026, his life story reached a wider audience when Netflix released Operation Safed Sagar, a series based on the Kargil War. Actor Jimmy Shergill played his role, bringing his wartime leadership to the screen.

Awards and Honours

Air Chief Marshal Birender Dhanoa’s career was decorated with some of the highest honours in the Indian military. His bravery during the Kargil War earned him the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM) in 1999.

Later, he was honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2015 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in 2016. These medals are among the highest peacetime awards given to officers for distinguished service. In 2015, he was also appointed as Honorary ADC to the President of India, a ceremonial role that reflected his stature in the armed forces.
