MMA Career
World Extreme Cagefighting
Poirier made his debut in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) on August 18, 2010, at WEC 50. He lost a unanimous decision to Danny Castillo. He bounced back with a first-round TKO win over Zach Micklewright at WEC 52 on November 11, 2010.
UFC
In October 2010, the WEC merged with the UFC, and all WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC. He made his UFC debut on January 1, 2011, at UFC 125, where he stepped in as a late replacement for the injured José Aldo, who was supposed to defend his featherweight title against Josh Grispi. He pulled off a huge upset by defeating Grispi by unanimous decision.
Poirier then went on a four-fight winning streak, defeating Jason Young, Pablo Garza, Max Holloway, and Jonathan Brookins, all by submission. He earned three Submission of the Night bonuses and one Fight of the Night bonus in the process. He faced his first major setback in the UFC when he lost a unanimous decision to Chan Sung Jung, aka “The Korean Zombie”, in a thrilling fight that was awarded the Fight of the Year by several media outlets.
Dustin rebounded with a first-round knockout win over Erik Koch at UFC 164 on August 31, 2013. He then faced Cub Swanson at UFC Fight Night 26 on February 16, 2014, in a highly anticipated bout that was expected to determine the next title contender in the featherweight division. However, he lost a unanimous decision to Swanson in a close and competitive fight.

Poirier decided to move up to the lightweight division after the loss to Swanson, citing the difficulty of cutting weight and the lack of opportunities in the featherweight division. He made his lightweight debut on April 4, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 63, where he knocked out Diego Ferreira in the first round. He followed that up with another first-round knockout win over Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night 68 on June 6, 2015.
Dustin then faced Joseph Duffy, who was considered one of the best prospects in the lightweight division, at UFC 195 on January 2, 2016. He dominated Duffy for three rounds and won a unanimous decision. He then faced Bobby Green at UFC 199 on June 4, 2016, and knocked him out in the first round with a punch.
Dustin Poirier’s next fight was against Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 94 on September 17, 2016. He was the betting favorite and was expected to win and move closer to a title shot. However, he was stunned by Johnson, who knocked him out in the first round with a combination of punches. This was Poirier’s first knockout loss in the UFC.
He then faced Charles Oliveira, the current UFC lightweight champion, at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021. Poirier was the betting favorite and was expected to win his first undisputed UFC title. However, he was defeated by Oliveira in the third round by rear-naked choke, after being dropped by a punch. Dustin showed respect to Oliveira after the fight, and said that he would take some time off to reflect on his future.
His most recent fight was against Justin Gaethje, in a rematch for the interim UFC lightweight title, at UFC 291 on July 29, 2023. He and Gaethje had another epic fight that lived up to the expectations of the fans. Poirier won by second-round TKO.
