Early Life, Birthday and Parents

Katja Schuurman was born on February 19, 1975 (age: 48 years, as of 2023), in Bunnik, Netherlands. She is the eldest daughter of a Dutch father and a Surinamese mother, who was born in Curaçao. She has a younger sister, Birgit, who is also a singer and actress. She grew up in a multicultural and artistic environment and developed an interest in performing from a young age. She attended the School of Arts in Utrecht, where she studied drama and music.

Acting Career

Katja Schuurman made her acting debut in 1992 when she appeared in the television series Uit de school geklapt. Her breakthrough came two years later when she joined the cast of the popular soap opera Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden (GTST) as Jessica, one of the nieces of Govert Harmsen. She quickly became a fan favorite, and her character was involved in several dramatic and romantic storylines.

She also formed a spin-off girl group with two other actresses from GTST, called Linda, Roos & Jessica. Their debut single, “Ademnood” (English version: “Turn Your Love Around”), topped the Dutch charts in late 1995. The group released several more hits, such as “Maar nu heb ik er een”, “Wereldmeid”, and “1999 X”, before disbanding in 1999.

Katja Schuurman left GTST in 1999, and pursued other acting opportunities. She starred in the movie Costa!, a comedy about a group of young people who work and party in a Spanish resort. The movie was a box office success, and spawned a television series of the same name, in which she reprised her role as Frida for the first two seasons.

She also appeared in other movies, such as Oesters van Nam Kee, Interview, and Sextet, as well as in several theater productions. She received critical acclaim for her performance as Medea in the 2005 television adaptation of the Greek tragedy.

Katja continued to work as an actress in the 2010s and 2020s, appearing in various genres and formats. She played the lead role in the romantic comedy series S1NGLE, the crime drama series Vlucht HS13, and the thriller series Nieuwe Buren. She also hosted several programs for different networks, such as BNN, NET5, and KRO-NCRV. In 2019, she returned to RTL, the network that launched her career with GTST. She currently stars in the comedy series Beter Laat Dan Nooit, in which she travels around the world with four older celebrities.

Singing Career

Katja Schuurman is not only a talented actress, but also a gifted singer. Besides being part of Linda, Roos & Jessica, she also pursued a solo career as a singer. She released her debut album, Katja, in 1999, which featured songs in both Dutch and English. The album was well-received, and spawned the singles “Totaal Verkocht” and “Lover or Friend”. She followed up with her second album, Liefde & Agressie, in 2001, which included the hit song “Ho Ho Ho”. She also collaborated with other artists, such as Postmen, Brainpower, and Ali B.

Schuurman took a break from singing for a few years, but returned to the music scene in 2015, when she released a new single, “Lichaamstaal”. She also participated in the musical show De Beste Zangers van Nederland, in which she performed songs by other artists, such as Anouk, Marco Borsato, and Frank Boeijen. In 2019, she released another single, “Zonder Jou”, which was a duet with her husband, Freek van Noortwijk.

Why Katja Schuurman Praises Igone de Jongh: “What a Heroine”

Katja Schuurman, a Dutch actress, singer, and TV personality, has expressed her admiration for Igone de Jongh, a former prima ballerina and the current partner of her ex-husband, Thijs Römer. She shared a photo of de Jongh on her Instagram account and wrote: “What a heroine. What a woman. What a friend. I love you, Igone”

Schuurman and de Jongh have developed a close friendship over the years, despite their complicated relationship with Römer. She was married to Römer, an actor and director, from 2006 to 2015, and they have a daughter, Sammie, together. De Jongh started dating Römer in 2018, after her divorce from Mathieu Gremillet, a French journalist. De Jongh and Römer have a son, Hugo, together.

Katja Schurman and de Jongh have supported each other through difficult times, especially after Römer was convicted of sexual offenses against three underage girls in August 2023. Schuurman issued a statement in which she said that she would never abandon Römer as the father of her daughter, but also distanced herself from his actions. De Jongh also released a statement in which she said that she was shocked and devastated by the revelations and that she had ended her relationship with Römer.

She and de Jongh have also bonded over their shared interests and passions, such as art, travel, and social causes. Schuurman told ‘&C’ magazine that they had an instant click when they met. “She is one of the sweetest people I know. Especially because we are so different, it works very well between us,” she said. She also recalled a fun memory of cleaning a dirty jacuzzi together in her garden, while their children played around.

Schuurman is not the only one who admires de Jongh. De Jongh is widely regarded as one of the best dancers in the Netherlands and has performed with the Dutch National Ballet for 24 years. She retired from ballet in 2019, and published a memoir, ‘Dancing for Yourself’, in which she revealed the challenges and joys of her career. She also participated in several TV shows, such as ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘The Masked Singer’, and ‘The Best Singers of the Netherlands’.

She and de Jongh are examples of women who have overcome adversity and achieved success in their fields. They are also role models for their children, and for many others who look up to them. They are women who live by their own terms, and who celebrate each other’s strengths. They are, indeed, heroines.
